Millmount Provides Braille Assistance for UK Pharma Giant!

Millmount Healthcare is working closely with a major UK-based pharmaceutical company for the application of Braille labels for several of their key pharmaceutical products.

The collaboration involves Millmount over-labelling the secondary packaging of the medicinal products with clear Braille labels. EU Directive 2004/27/EC, Article 56(a) does not require Braille to be printed on the immediate packaging (blisters, bottles, ampoules, etc.). Manufacturers are instead required to apply Braille to the outer/secondary packaging of the medicinal product, which is normally a carton. The clear Braille labels were produced by one of Millmount's audited and approved suppliers and provide an economic solution for the packaging requirements outlined in EU Directive 2004/27/EC. Braille is very effective on labels because the relief printing method used makes the dots easy to feel.

The deadline towards the use of Braille on all medicinal packs throughout the European Union (EU) is drawing nearer. In October 2005 it became compulsory within all EU Member States to include Braille wording on the packaging of every newly approved medicine. For medicines that had marketing authorisation prior to the above date, the transitional period in the European Union ran for the past 5 years. Subsequently, by 30th October, 2010, the legislation will apply to all medicinal products, irrespective of when they were approved.
